Why GMO and not Organic?
My Organic farm got more and more surrounded by GMO fields.
The world is fighting against GMOs, but here where I live the GMO fields are getting more and more.
Not long ago near our farm here, trees and bushes got cut down to make space for big machinery, which is used for these fields.
Nobody was concerned with this here, while in other parts of Canada, like Alberta, Shelterbelts are being replaced because of erosion of the soil.
Talking to conventional farmers, they say we need to do this if we want to make money, they say Organic farms have only weeds.
Do they?
Organic Farmers
Organic Farmers work from the heart and get dirty hands not only to make money but they also love what they do. They care for the soil and the environment.
What did the farmers do in the past? How much does poison cost?
Is it free?
I can remember a time when in the fields Poppy-and Cornflowers grew. How beautiful this looks.

Now it is 6 years later and still, these RoundUp tanks are at the same place. Nothing change, it got even worse.
Recently some farmers are on Facebook talking about the food in Canada and change. They said you have to give us time. I said how much time does it still need? It is now more than 20 years that Percy Schmeiser a Canadian farmer fights against Monsanto. Vandana Shiva also is to seen in many documentaries and even on TV. How can one miss this? How much time does it need? Another 20 years polluting the soil and the water and our food?
Unfortunately, the farmers seem not even to know what they do. In another conversation, it is obvious that they have no clue and think GMOs are forbidden in Canada. How sad is this?
And even worse most people do not know or care but wonder why our world is in the state it is.
How can we expect that the government is doing something about if people themselves have no mercy with their future Generation?

My husband and I debate over this many times. Have you heard of Joe Salatin of Polyface farms? He was on TED TV on how organic farming is a must for our earth. To him, if we love our earth, we’ll farm organically.
I personally wish I could afford organic for everything- even clothes. I buy what I can that is organic. I want the organic farmers to get the money. Although, big chains are also making organic brands so it’s probably better that I go to farm stands, huh. =)

Why thank you for sharing my story! The machinery has gotten enormous over the past 10 years. This season we will be seeing more soybeans than corn as beans are at an all time high and corn has dropped in price. It is sad to see the trees knocked down. I hope someone gets smart before it is too late.

I try to buy organic produce as much as it’s available in my rural area. I love going to the farmer’s markets here. Everything is so fresh, and most of it is organic. It’s a shame that it’s so expensive in the grocery stores because I’m sure more people would support it if they could afford to. Thanks for the heads up and the education on this topic. I my opinion organic food is not expensive ,
because it feeds much better than other food.
better to spend money on food than supplements.
We are what we eat and good food
keeps the medication bills away.

We buy from local markets here in Thailand Erika. Everything is organic, fresh, and free of the harmful stuff that are pumped into GMOs. Yuck. Nice share and reminder!

Really strange I came across this post of yours today as we are on holiday and went for lunch at an all organic farm shop. It was massive and I didn’t realise there were so many organic items. Expensive but nice!!

Sometimes when I watch travel shows on television I am envious of other countries who have many open air markets with fresh, organic produce available. Where I live it organic produce is available at a much higher cost.

good things to buy,like Ryan Biddulph tells us
in Thailand ,for example.
I know organic may cost more ,but eating organic
saves the costs for supplements and maybe medication.

Hey Erika,
This is a coincidence because earlier today at the gym, I was talk with one of my Dad’s friends about eating more organic/alkaline foods. I started doing this more when I started taking a club boxing class and it makes a world of difference. It gives me much more energy and i just feel more lively when I’m doing this intense workout.
I can remember going to the Dominican Republic and buying the fruit over there. The fruit there taste way more sweeter and natural then the produce they have over here. It was so good and that wasn’t even sure if I wanted to come back to the United States LOL…. Thanks for sharing!
I quite agree that organically and locally grown produce is much fresher and tastier and should be included as much as possible into our diets – and everyone can grow some produce …even in pots on their window sill, and it is fun to watch things grow …your own always tastes amazing!

So much has to do with producing for the masses. We the people must find solutions to this dilema. Organic is better. What do we do about demand and suppply. What do we do about affordability? A challenge at that. Yet I believe there is a solution for every problem we must seek it out. = Toni

yes it is us people who need to reject to buy GMO
Supply is enough ,there is food enough for eberybody.
the big GMO farmers only provide 30% of the food for people .
70% is supplied from small farmers But what this GMO farms do is
they pollute not only the soil ,but also the water.
The only way is to not buy products without label and
buy local.

This is one topic that ruffles my feathers! Since the 1990’s when I first heard of GMO’s…I knew to stand back from them. I even had nightmares about how I could never have corn on the cob again in my life.
I felt like chicken little…spreading the word. But, here in the U.S. many have been trying to fight the good fight. Sadly, the last one on Monsanto was turned down.
I could go on a rant…but It would bee an ebook to comment. I’m sure glad to see you taking this information and putting it out there.
This sort of farming is a danger to us all!

yes I am talking and and doing about this a long time ,
sometimes I think it is hopeless ,when we came first here ,we started the organic
movement here ,my son was very active ,in between he is totally fed up.
There a re really still people here ,they believe that we do not have enogh food without GMO
I even made evenings and showed documentaries ,but they look at them like it is a movie and forget about.
Only very slow some younger people get aware.It makes me mad to see all this poison in the middle of the town and nobody cares.

I found your site through another site but lost it. Anyway, when my husband and I discovered the truth about what we were eating we were appalled. We immediately started trying to figure out what we could do about it. We own about 4 acres of land with our house and decided to get start a garden using organic practices. We bought books, read articles, and asked around for tips. Our garden is about .5 an acre as of last year but it grows in size each year. This fall we added fruit trees that will be producing in 3-5 years.We have added to our farm (never thought I would say I own a farm!!!!) with a beef cow, turkeys, chickens, goats, and pigs. All of our animals receive organic feed from a local mill (we are also big on supporting local businesses whenever possible.) All of our animals are also heritage breeds. We are expecting our first litter of piglets and our first kidding from our female goat this spring! We are going to be investing in two beef cows this year as well as a dairy cow. We are hoping to raise and sell the pigs and one of the beef cows to pay for the feed of all of our other animals. It is a slow process that includes a LOT of work. But I can honestly say it is worth it. When I prepare a meal I know my family is getting food that will nourish them and NOT make them sick in 20 years. I try to talk to friends and family about this topic but I am treated like a fanatic. It does not stop me though! I won’t be satisfied until everyone I know and love has available to them HEALTHY FOOD. I pray that all of us can figure a way to have Non-GMO readily in our stores and homes. Sorry for droning on.
