The second Pillar of the spiritual side of success is fasting.
When we think of fasting, we think usually about doing a fasting diet, but we can do a different fast.
It can be fast from something we do every day and often unconsciously,
It can be fasting from sorrows, hectic, and stress, this can be a practice that makes us more aware.
Worry and doubt open up to fear. Hurry and worry are two ways we express our doubt and fear.
What if we today do fast from doubt and fear?
If we catch ourselves hurrying, these are actions that are expressions of fear or finding ourselves worrying,
which is thinking about things and possibilities which may happen or may not happen at all?
We are sending our minds to play with our fear. What if we fast from these problems today and are in our minds with God?
Notice when these Problems come up, catch yourself, and change them. Because even if we have the intention not to worry or hurry,
it will show up unconscious. Let’s slow down and walk in slower steps; let’s take deeper breaths and fast today from all worry, hurry, and doubt.
Whenever stress and doubt come up, be aware and change it, take a deep breath, and slow down.
Do this for a day and see what happens.
Make an appointment with stress, doubt, sorrow, comparison, or fear; tell them, not today; I deal with you another day.
What do you think about fasting from the hurry and worry?
I think it is a good practice for us.
Will you give it a try?
Next time we explore the third Pillar of the spiritual side of success.
It is being of Service.
Here are some quotes about fasting:
“The purpose of fasting is to loosen to some degree the ties which bind us to the world of material things and our
surroundings as a whole, in order that we may concentrate all our spiritual powers upon the unseen and eternal things.”
Ole Hallesby“We must master our egoism, and through this mastery, step outside ourselves and educate ourselves in giving.
Fasting requires that we rediscover all that is alive around us, and reconcile ourselves with our environment.”
Tariq Ramadan“If you’re having a difficult time making the best decision then consider fasting. Fasting is simply taking something
you regularly do and replacing it with praying and seeking God. For example instead of eating a meal you can take
that time to seek God and allow Him to speak to you about the decision.”
Dan Black“Fasting is a natural method of healing. When animals or savages are sick, they fast.”
Paramahansa Yogananda“Religious ascetics, who led their lives abstaining from food, came to the conclusion that fasting improved not only
their spiritual state, but also their physical condition, and through fasting many diseases could be cured.”
Dr. Inamura Motoo“Fasting is the single greatest natural healing therapy. It is nature’s ancient, universal ‘remedy’ for many problems.”
Elson Haas“Fasting is the greatest remedy– the physician within.”
Philippus Paracelsus,
Here I have a little story from another kind of fasting
When I was living in Iran, I experienced the Ramadan fasting time.
We have been living in Mashhad, which is a holy pilgrimage town for Shiite Muslims.
Mashhad is the capital of the province Khorasan and was in the past a major place along the silk road.
Also famous because of the Poet Ferdowsi and his “Shahnameh.”
An abundance of all kinds of tasty fruits and the most famous Safran grows there.
Mashad is located northeast of Iran near the border of Afghanistan and Turkmenistan.
There is a big Mosque called Haram by the people. it is the shrine of the 8th Iman, Imam Reza.
I lived with my husband and my two kids there, in our street and area all the people knew me.
Sometimes, the whole roof around was full of kids, who gathered there to see what I was doing.
There was one store where I used to get my knitting wool and needles. My mother came for a visit and
called the owner, the Super businessman.
Whenever we showed up at his store, everybody else had to wait.
He has a shelf full of little boxes with no labels on them, and when I was searching for needles or hooks, he was patiently ready to open them all up and let me find the right ones.
Always happy to have a chat with me.
Ramadan time
During Ramadan time, I noticed that the mood of many people was not very good after a while.
I knew this came from not eating and drinking. In the beginning, everybody was ambitious, but after a week, it changed slowly. Every Muslim has to fast, but the sick do not need to fast.
I was studying at that time about different religions and it was interesting to interview the people around, but this would be a whole book to tell about this.
One Ramadan day I visited the store of our Super businessman and saw he was sitting
on the floor and eating. I was astounded and asked him about it. he showed me a huge bandage around his thumb and told me he had cut his finger. It looked much more serious than only a cut. But I knew and smiled, and he smiled back because he
realized I knew what was going on. He said:” I am sick and cannot fast.”
This was his way to avoid fasting in an allowed way.
I was amused by this clever trick.
But good for him and his customers; he was in a good mood.
This was in 1973, today it is not as easy as back then to do tricks like this.
I think fasting should be a decision and not forced, which it is today over there.
Would you excuse the Super businessman for his trick and being rather in a good mood than fasting?
Please leave a comment and share your thoughts
Thank you
Hi Erika, Yes, I’ve also fasted. To me I think fasting is a personal decision. We fast for different reasons, but I do love the fast on doubt and fear…I’ve done fasting for wtching my mindset, and for other reasons. I love seeing the pictures of you and your children. Thanks so much for posting this. It’s something we all should consider.

Hi BG,
Yes ,I think fasting is something we should be free to decide .
And I believe it is a discipline and to get more aware.
Also I think it is very good in case of sickness, because
naturally we do not want to eat in this time.
But fasting from hurry, worry and doubt is something good
and we can learn a lot about ourselves if we do this .
Thank you Bg ,happy to see you here.
Erika
Hi,Erika
Of course, fasting is a personal choice and can’t be forced. However, if the person does the right way the first time in fasting with good direction, he will automatically like to join in again. Why? He enjoys the benefit of fasting.
I did semi 21 days Daniel’s fast. I had 5 day without solid food and followed by 16 days with salads. At the end, I felt so light in both physical and spiritual senses. My mind was so clear that there was no barrier in my thinking and vision.
I enjoyed greatly about your life in Mashad: people, streets, culture, etc.

Stella Chiu recently posted…What is that in your hands?
Hi Stella ,
Yes it is better to have a choice to fast and it does not have to be all the time about
not eating. A fast like you did is for sure very beneficial. But we can fast more often from
worry and hurry as well, which will also be beneficial for our awareness of life.
I am glad you liked my story ,unfortunately right now the fasting there is really forced.
If somebody is found eating during the Ramadan month, it can get him to get beaten with a stick.
This is not the right way of fasting .
Thank you
Erika
Hi Erika,
Thanks for this great share on fasting. The longest I’ve done is one day. I did drink a lot of water, but still got dizzy and didn’t feel well. Come to find out my blood sugar drops. I was doing it with David…he lasted 3 days.
For me, fasting is a great way for our mind/body/spirit. I still will eat only one small meal for a few days during the change of each season. I have known many people who have fasted for many days and went through an amazing spiritual experience.

Hi Donna,
You are right ,fasting from eating is for many a great experience .
It is a good and natural thing to fast when sick.
I did not fast often ,but I do fast from worry and hurry
which is a good thing to do in our time full of stress and it needs our
attention and makes us aware why we act like this. This fasting is a discipline
to find out more about ourselves.
Thank you
Erika
Thank you
Hi Erika,
Different cultures have different ways of living and as an American, living in a country of “choice” I can only say, oh course fasting should be a personal decision. But If I were in another country I would respect the way of the land … so I can not say …

Hi Lesly ,
I think I did not do a good job this time with my post.
I should put the story separate. The man in the story
was able to avoid fasting that time, today it would not be possible anymore
because if somebody gets caught eating ,he will get beaten .
It has not much to do with the traditions of the land but politics 🙂
My main intention was to write about another fasting ,which is a discipline
to make us more aware of our actions. The fasting from worry doubt and hurry ,
which is a form of fear.
You see I still have to learn , how to write 🙂
Thank you

Hey Erika
I have never done fasting, I have done cleanses where I felt like I was fasting, but never fasting. I do cleanses on a regular basis and coming out of those I always feel better and clearer in thought.
Thanks

Hi Andy ,
cleansing is a good way to feel better and be more clear.
But another way of fasting can be fasting from worry ,doubt and hurry ,
which is a good discipline to get aware ,why we are acting this way and change it.
Thank you

Hi Erika
I hope you are having a fantastic day. I am landing on your site for the first time. And, I am loving the positive vibes.
Coming back to the post, I have seen many people who fast on a specific day of the week. Fasting requires lots of will power. In this process, we calm down our tasting buds and clean our system from all the impurities. In Muslim community, Ramadan is the holy month of fasting. I completely agree with Paramahansa’s quote. Fasting is a natural way of healing. Thanks for coming up with a wonderful topic.

Hi Yatin ,
Nice ,I am happy you did land here 🙂
You are right fasting needs discipline. This is why it also can be used to
increase our awareness. We can fast from hurry and worry for a day ,for example,
and be aware whenever this feelings come up and change it. This is a discipline
which helps us on our way to more success. We get aware that this feelings are
coming from fear and fear holds us back from moving forward.
It is even in the Bhagavad Gita chapter 4
“Fasting is recommended as tapasya, austerity, because it helps us control our senses,
and sense control is very helpful in becoming conscious.
We can not come to goodness(sattva-guna)if we are not aware of our senses.
Fasting is also good for health because it gives the digestive organs a rest.”
Is this not amazing ? what is taught today ,the wisdom has been here a long time 🙂
Thank you for your positive vibes 🙂
Erika
I did a few sponsored fasts when younger to raise money for charity. I like the concept of fasting from doubt and fear and will keep it in mind when I start worrying about something.
What would happen nowadays if someone is ill (not injured like your example) in Iran during Ramadan and it would harm their health if they fasted?
Sue Bride recently posted…31 Days of Free Square Images For Facebook & Instagram
Hi Sue ,
Yes, fasting from doubt and fear is a good thing to do ,
schedule it for another day and usually it is gone 🙂
The sick people do not need to fast ,this was always and still is .
Nowadays it is only if somebody does not fast and somebody sees it ,
he gets in trouble ,not the sick. In the past it was not forces like today.
Thank you Sue ,excuse my late reply
Erika
Hey Erika, thanks for sharing a peek into your past and your stories, entertaining and educating as usual. I also have a connection to the Muslim culture through my family, but happpy that they do not actually fast.
Andrea Ansari recently posted…People Don’t Care About THIS. Instead… [YCDIS #22]
Hi Andrea,
yes your name Ansari tells me this ,I have a Muslim Indian friend
with the same name and in Iran we have Ansai as well.
Many Muslim families do not fast for Ramadan anymore.
For me it is a discipline used in the past . I think it is good
to fast sometimes ,but it should not be forced.
I think fasting of worry and hurry is a good thing ,
because we can get aware of our fears and learn it
is often unnecessary.
Thank you
All the best
Erika
i would really struggle to cope, i get migraines if i don’t eat at regular times so it would be painful for me to do this

Hi Dexter,
I think fasting has to be a choice or we may feel not like eating something if we are sick.
But we can decide to fast from worry or fear and put it aside for a day and often we see
it was not necessary. It is a way to get aware of our thinking ,which causes problems .
Thank you
Erika
I have done quite a bit of intermittent fasting with food and it seems to work well if you remain disciplined. I have never thought about fasting from worry or fear. I think its a great idea and probably takes just as much discipline.
Jenni Ryan recently posted…Having the Right Heart Space in Network Marketing
Hi Jenny ,
Fasting with food can make us aware of our body and fasting from hurry and fear makes us aware,
that we worry about things which will never happen and it is unnecessary ,
If we put it away for a time and control our thoughts we can see it is our thinking.
It is a discipline which makes us more aware of our thinking.
Thank you ,Jenni
