Where is it coming from our Valentine’s Day?
Everywhere people celebrate Valentine’s Day, but not many know where it is coming from. It is a day to remember Love, especially for lovers but also for couples and friends. It is basically a beautiful thought; even these days, it seems to be more commercial.
Here is the story of Valentine.
Valentine lived in the third century AD in Terni, Italy. According to the legend, Valentine’s day goes back to the Italian Bishop Saint Valentine. It is told that he was secretly against an existing prohibition of married lovers, even if they were slaves or soldiers. He married these lovers in the Christian tradition, which broke the prohibition of the Roman emperor.
At that time, couples were not allowed to get married in a church because Christianity was banned as a religion. It is said that he liked to give and had a garden where he grew vegetables and flowers.
He did give flowers from his garden to the newly married couples and blessed them so that the marriages, so was said, have been under a lucky star.
Valentin was not lucky, and he was beheaded on February 14 in the year 269, by order of the Roman emperor because of his Christian faith. But Valentin’s death was on the same day as the ancient Roman festival Lupercalia.
Lupercalia was that time, “The Feast of the Wolf,” the festival of the Roman Goddess Lupa (the female Wolf). She was worshiped in the form of the goddess Juno Februata, the Goddess of “Love Fever.” On this day, flowers were sacrificed, and couples apparently connected by “love lottery” for one year. Girls went to the temple to consult the love oracle.
Young men draw from the lottery an unmarried girl’s name. The drawn couples walked along the river Tiber, and many of them became lovers. About 100 years after his death, Valentine was canonized. In the Middle Ages, 496 AD, 200 years later, Pope Gelasius declared February 14 the existing holiday and customs of the Christian faith, and now called it the day of lovers “Valentine’s Day.” The old tradition was continued under a new label; it was the same day as the “heathen” celebration.
Valentine’s Day around the world
An important place has the Valentine’s Day in English-speaking countries. more than 600 years ago, in England, “Valentine” cards with little love poems were given, and it was the fashion to send cards along with flowers. The writer Samuel Pepys wrote a love letter on 02.14.1667 to his wife. From then on, the tradition of sending letters and flowers started in the prestigious British society.
The poet Chaucer found his poem “The Parliament of Birds” on the occasion of the St. Valentine’s Day celebration at the court of King Richard II in 1383; he performed it for the first time. He brings the pairing of the birds in context; because it was Valentine’s Day, on which the birds were married.
In West Slavic and East German areas, Valentine’s Day and the feast of the so-called “Bird Wedding” was celebrated; there is also a German folk song, which I often sing with my Grandkids. Whenever we have a long drive or work in the garden in spring, we sing the “Bird Wedding” song and even include birds from here and make little poems.
Since ancient times”birds” have been a symbol of love and sex, ease, freedom, and enthusiasm.
Beyond commercialism, Valentine’s Day reminds us of the desire for love and pleasure. The most important here is that we can see that after thousands of years, the action of love by a human being still is being remembered. Valentine did not care about rules, race, or status and did give love no matter if a slave or rich man.
This shows Love always wins, and love and kindness always will be remembered.
βIn the flush of love’s light, we dare be brave. And suddenly, we see that love costs all we are and will ever be. Yet it is only love which sets us free.βMaya Angelou
βLove wins. Love always wins.βMitch Albom

I hope you liked this legend about Valentine’s Day
I think it is true what Gandhi said:Β βTruth and Love Always Win.Β When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it–always.βMahatma Gandhi
What are your thoughts? Do you believe Love always wins and will be remembered?

Erika,
Thanks for your wonderful historical overview of Valentine’s Day. It is great to know where it all comes from.
But the bottom line is that this special day pushes most of us to acknowledge those we care about with
love attention – giving chocolates, roses, teddy bears, hugs, kisses, promises and even marriage proposals.
Even though many people have become cynical and view the day only as commercialism, the message is
all about love – giving love, showing love and being love.
I do believe that love wins and that love can be cultivated and expanded or suppressed and squished.
I choose to help the expansion and growth of love.

Hi Dr.Erica,
I thought you will like the post and see how an act of love is remembered
and survived even Valentine was killed for it. The energy of love is strong
and always wins. I too choose to help to increase love .I like this quote:
‘Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.’
I think love is nothing outside of us coming to us,but coming through us.
Thank you

Hi Erika,
“Love wins, always wins”… I like that quote best. It really cuts to the chase, eh? (as they say in Canada, ha)
Funny, though, how the concept of loving one another as human being somehow got commercialized into just a romantic kind of love. That’s a great form of love, of course, but there are so many types of love, as you’ve kind of alluded to here. I’m sure Gandhi says “truth and love always win” he’s not talking about winning over that special guy or gal with roses or chocolates, hehe.

Hi Donna,
you are right Gandhi sure did not mean this.
And Valentine did an act of love which is remembered.
I think the love is often not really understood some confuse
it with sex, some only love if they want something from you
or if something is cute π
In my opinion, it is nothing outside of us. we can become love
generate love energy and act loving. The word is often
used like OMG,Jesus… I noticed recently that kids start
to use it this way. One of my grandkids said it every 5 minutes
like OMG. I told her not to do this and only say I love you if she
really feels it. This new fashion is not good and it makes it like the
OMG a phrase. π
Let’s be love
Thank you

Hi Erika,
I don’t think I really ever knew how Valentine’s Day came about. Sad but interesting.
I saw above that you were talking about the letters OMG used in texting, etc. I don’t like the standard meaning for that either, so I spell mine out like this; OMGosh. I’m sure I get some laughs from time to time but, oh well.
Thanks for sharing. Have a great evening.
Hi Monna ,
I am glad it was interesting for you .
Yes, this words, like OMG,Jesus even how are you, often are
used like a phrase without really thinking.
I always have been aware of it and tried to avoid it.
I remember, we have been at an event from the immigration service,
after we came to Canada and 2 of my grandkids were so shocked
because there was a lady, she started near every sentence with a loud
OMG.:) The kids were not used to this π But in between it is so common
that we do not really notice it anymore. This is why I told the kids
not to say “I love you” like this and only say if they really feel it .
I think this one we really need to take care of π
Thank you for the comment.
All the best for you
Erika
Hi Erika,
I’m a week late to this celebration, but it’s no less interesting for that! I had no idea that was the origin and history of Valentine’s day.
Hmm the “love lottery” sounds a little scary LOL
My favorite of the quotes is the Maya Angelou one about how people make you feel. That is SO true.
Thanks for a fascinating history,

Hi Joy,
it does not matter when we read the story,it is interesting
even after Valentines day. Next year you may remember the story.
I think the love lottery, was not a bad idea to make experiences
and learn to know different people, these days it seems for many
young people difficult to find somebody and I think it was under
control:)I like Maya Angelou’s quote as well.
I am glad you liked to learn about the history of Valentines Day.

In Norfolk, England, there is a custom on Valentine’s Day whereby Father Valentine leaves an anonymous gift on a child’s doorstep, knocks on the door and disappears. A lovely way to include children in the celebration of giving and love.
Enjoy the journey!

I don’t want to remember how I am passing my valentines day. I think every day is special for me. Nothing special on 14 Feb.
Taposh Kapuria,
I lived most of my life not knowing about Valentines Day.
When it came up it was more a commercial thing. I think it
is not bad to remember friendship, love and kindness, but
it would be better is we always do this not only on Valentines Day.
You are right.
