Did you know? What we wear affects our well-being.

Here is a guest post by Shruti Bajwa, sharing knowledge about the importance of the right kind of fabric we should wear, not only for workouts. Today most people wear fossil fashion and are not even aware of the danger it has to our well-being and the environment.

Around 35 years ago, I had a fabric and wool store where I promoted and sold only natural fiber. But synthetics took over in between because of convenience people adapted to it more and more. I avoid wearing synthetics and like only the feeling of natural material on my skin. Let’s do something for our general knowledge:

Most important fabric features for workout wear

Sportswear science and workout technology are working together to make a better sports world. There was a time when people used to wear whatever came to their minds without a second thought. But nowadays, lots of research and trials are going on every day to take sports to the next level. Many of these innovations revolve around the fabric that we use, like sports bras, leggings, tank tops, and other sportswear.

Today we are discussing what factors contribute to great workout clothes.

Different features of an ideal workout fabric

Moisture wicking and absorbability

Moisture wicking is a very important factor for ideal breathable fabric, and you might have seen ‘moisture wicking’ in the description part of the product details. But, there can be different meanings of moisture-wicking in the cloth description. Moisture wicking is the process by which the fabric evaporates the moisture from the fabrics, and this thing is known as the ‘capillary action’, something we read about tree roots and our skin. Tiny gaps in the fabric allow moisture to be pulled from the fabric material surface and evaporates. Don’t get confused between ‘moisture wicking’ and ‘moisture absorbing’. Cotton is a great moisture-absorbing fabric, but it takes a long time to dry the moisture.

Anti-odor

A lot of time, we sweat; unfortunately, sweat tends to become an odor. This happens due to a combination of sweat and bacteria building on your skin. Moisture-wicking fabrics help you mitigate this effect, but some moisture-wicking material has a tendency to stick in the fabric’s tiny gaps and does not get removed even after washing, and after some washes, they start stinking. On the other hand, fabrics like Bamboo have odor-resistant features which do not build up stench over time. This fabric stays fresh, and you don’t need to buy it again and again.

Sustainable

Most synthetic fabrics lack this feature. So, most of these synthetic material fabrics are not man-made and do not stay long, and many brands of businesses only use them due to their other qualities.
Many synthetic fibers are made using petroleum, coal, and other fossil fuels, reducing non-renewable resources and leading to carbon emissions. Microplastic comes off on these fabrics during wearing and washing. These fabrics end up damaging the ocean and lead to environmental pollution. Chemicals used in making these synthetic fibers are harmful to the environment and can be harsh on your skin.

Stretchy

Whether you are doing low-intensity yoga or High-intensity HIIT workout, you need some room to move. You need the flexibility to move from your workout fabric, and it should stretch enough to make your moves. While you go shopping for fabric, check the elasticity of the fabric. If it is spandex or polypropylene, you can relax as it can stretch up to 8 times its normal shape.

Breathable

Breathable fabric is most needed during warm weather conditions and keeps you cool during hot days. It comes with a biological process which is known as thermoregulation. The tiny gaps between the threads of your fabric prevent the heat from affecting your skin and protects you from overheating. This airflow helps your skin sweat dry quickly and from your fabric.

Quick drying

We cannot emphasize more on moisture-wicking clothes that bring the quality of absorbing moisture and dry the fabric quickly. If you ever experienced a sport or a run with your friends during childhood, you must remember your cotton fabric shirt, which was full of sweat and felt like a wet towel just due to the longer drying quality. Wet clothes are heavier than dry clothes and do not feel good because of the wetness compounds due to the low drying capacity of the fabric.

Ultra soft

The softness of the fabrics is not just what we ask for, but it can be impactful as well. An uncomfortable or heavy outfit can be a hurdle in achieving your workout goals. When you face problems during a run, it can be your heavy, uncomfortable clothes that do not support you in the run, and you can avoid it with an ultra-soft and comfortable fabric. Bamboo fabric has this essential ultra-soft feature and does not let you feel uncomfortable during important fitness or sports goal events.

The Bottom Line

Whether you are going for a run or workout session, comfortable fabrics are most needed. If you want to make your event efficient and memorable, you need to have eco-friendly clothing and ultra-soft fabric like Bamboo for the most desirable results. Look at the most needed quality of the fabrics, such as stretchability, moisture wicking, or quick drying, for having an uninterrupted workout or sports event.
