Being Aย Misfit And The Story Of An Elephant
Updated Aug.27. 2023
Last week our friend Philip V.Ariel posted this video of a mad Elephant on Facebook.
It was a Temple Elephant who started to damage whatever machine he saw on his way, and nobody could stop him. This reminded me of a story my friend Mary Morrissey told, which I am going to share here.
In India, the Elephant is the farm animal, unlike cattle for much of the rest of the world because in India, cattle are considered sacred so the cows are treated with reverence and respect.
Do you know how they train Elephants in India?
The elephants are trained this way: When they train small Elephants, they get a baby Elephant, and they put a big strong rope around one of their legs and a big strong stake in the ground. And that baby Elephant pulls and tugs and fights and tries to get away and free himself. Ultimately, the rope and the stake are stronger, and the Elephant finally gives in to the tug of the rope.
As the Elephant gets larger, instead of increasing the rope and stake in size, they decrease it because what happens is the Elephant gives over to the tug. It leans toward the tug instead of away from it. So for adult Elephants they just weave river reeds together, and with the slightest little tug, that Elephant will go wherever the tug is.
Now, it isn’t that the elephant doesn’t have the capacity to break free from that river reed fully. It does, but it doesn’t have the knowledge, and so it is disconnected from its capacity because it doesn’t have the knowledge. It has learned to give over to the tug.
He is a powerful animal, but animals do not have mental faculties like a human, and he learns to believe that he can not free himself from the river reeds.
What are the mental faculties?
Learn here about Mental Faculties >You Have Magic In Your Mind
We are blessed
We are the only creatures on earth blessed with these phenomenal powers, and very few people are even aware that they have them and can use them.
These mental faculties are perception, reason, will, memory, imagination, and intuition.
We were born with the ability to see, hear, smell, taste, and touch, senses which we process information through into our conscious mind. This information can come from anywhere, like the television, radio, things we read, even what others say to us and we decide and make a conscious choice whether we will accept or reject that information.
โAn educated person is a person who has so developed the faculties of their mind that they can acquire anything they want or its equivalent without violating the rights of others.โ Napoleon Hill
“The central task of education is to implant a will and facility for learning; it should produce not learned but learning people.
The truly human society is a learning society, where grandparents, parents, and children are students together.
Eric Hoffer
River reed thinking
Coming back to the example of the elephant: You and I have some river reed thinking. We have been trained to look to conditions to determine what our opportunities are and what our possibilities are, and it’s completely backward.
We have learned to live outside in life when the authority and the empowerment to choose and decide the first creation is in our thoughts.
What is within you is greater than anything that is in your surroundings. What is within you is greater than any circumstance; you are more powerful than you think. Everything is created twice. Your history does not need to determine your destiny unless you decide that it must.
What this Elephant did made him a misfit. But he is an animal and does not have the mental facilities a Human has. In the case of the Elephant, we do not really know what triggered his behavior; we only can guess. Did he realize his power? But nobody would pay attention to it, and nobody would think about if he would not be a misfit.
A population subjected to drastic change is a population of misfits.
Eric Hoffer The Ordeal of Changeย
What is a misfit?
A misfit is somebody who gets out of the river reed thinking and questions and has different views on culture and traditional society. Not everyone who is a misfit can change the world profoundly like, for example, Jesus did; he was a misfit in his time.
Jesus came into the world and did not conform. He upset the religious authorities of the day by doing and teaching things that went against their traditions. He also did things that went against their laws.
Jesus did not conform.
The sinners flocked to hear His message, and the Pharisees didnโt like that at allโฆ..
Luke 15:1-1-2 Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners
for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying,
This man receiveth sinners and eateth with them. He healed on
the Sabbath, He touched people that were considered unclean,
He ate with those the religious authorities hated.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the
renewing ofย your mind, that ye may prove what is that good,
and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:22
โHere’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers.
The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.
Because they change things. They push the human race forward.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change
the world are the ones who do.โ
Rob Siltanen
Being a misfit needs self-confidence and a need to know the true self.
I learned to experience this very early in life through many changes in situations.
It started when I was 7 we moved to another town, later my mother dared to have a divorce, which was something weird at that time, we often had to move, and I had to change nearly every year the school, with 18 I moved in another country with totally different tradition and religion and started to question.
Most of the time, I played the game I was supposed to play, but no ruler can be the ruler of your thoughts if you are aware. I did dare to be me.ย
See >ย 7 Tips On How To Find Your True Self And Be Authentic
As a misfit, you can feel rejected and have to learn to trust your intuition and find yourself. Because you ask inconvenient questions, people make you feel you are an outsider, but I later was told by some of them that they did like it, but did not dare to acknowledge it, and it made them think.
I love Conspiracy but not the Theory.
“We have to adjust ourselves, and every radical adjustment is a crisis in self-esteem: we undergo a test, we have to prove ourselves.
It needs inordinate self-confidence to face drastic change without
inner trembling.”

Another view on the Elephant Story:
A new way of thinking
Many people around the world, especially young people, start to question, look for a deeper meaning of life, and feel like misfits.
Do we need a new way of thinking? A new religion? I think our world changed since science made us believe everything works like a machine and divided everything into parts: the universe and human beings.
Accepting everything that we are taught and not questioning is believing in somebody else’s belief.
How do we know if their beliefs are the truth?
We do not need something new; I think we need to go back to the ancient ways, spirituality, the way of self-realization, remember who we really are, and learn to know our true selves and follow our hearts.
“And be you renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the
New Man(humanity),ย which after God is created in righteousness
and true holiness.
Ephesians 2:24
It is good not to be scared of being a misfit; they make us think and can change the world step by step.
My favorite quote is from Eric Hoffer:
“In a world of change, the learners shall inherit the earth,
while the learned shall find themselves beautifully equipped
to deal with a world that no longer exists,” and so it is.
Be a Misfit – Never Compromise!
To fit with the existing established order is to lose your individuality. And thatโs your whole world.
The moment you compromise and lose your individuality, you have lost everything. You have committed suicide. The people who are fit in the world are people who have destroyed themselves.
“The real misfit is a humble man.
Thatโs why nobody can absorb him.
He is free because he is free of the ego.” – Osho

I agree with you Erika. The only thing that seperate us from the animals is our mind and because of the intelligence we have, we are conguering the mind but it is really unfortunate that these days, we have started misusing our mind and is using it for our damage. We may be using it for our benefits, like building new building, digging ocean and grounds for the resources, but by doing this we are harming our nature and in turn we are harming us. In the same way, there is something called humanity that we all humans possess but even that is fading day by day as people are becoming hurtless. In some places situation is so bad that it will be better to sit along with a lion than sit with a human.

Very interesting and informative piece,
Oh my,,, thanks a lot for the kind mention.
That was indeed an amazing video i received via my WhatsApp.
Yes,the difference between man and animal is his thinking power or his mind power!
As said; if we look within us we can find that we are greater than something around us!
What is within you and me is greater than any circumstance, Yes, you are more powerful than we think. but sad often we miss that concept!

Hi Erika,
I first heard the story of how elephants are trained from Mary Morrissey in 2009 and I have been using it to illustrate the power of conditioning since. Love it!
So many people conform to the power of their present results; however, we should never settle for the chains imposed upon us. Emotional chains are the most difficult chains to break, but we are strong enough to break free (even if we accepted a long time ago that we were not).

Very interesting, however I don’t really agree that animals do not have the capacity to think. I understand your example fo the elephants, but when something that young is taught in that way they are ground down into thinking they have no choice so they comply. It is quite the same with children despite their supposed greater intelligence. If you treat something in a certain way for long enough it will usually bow down for a quiet life.
Enjoy the journey!
Mandy Allen recently posted…Cleansing your personal space
Hi Mandy,
I did not say that animals can not think, Animals have not the mental faculties humans have.
This is the only thing which makes a difference. A dog, for example, knows he is in a room, but
he does not know that he knows that he is in a room. Maybe it is a bit complicated,it is
something maybe necessary to talk or look closer at. Animals have not reasoning mind for example.
Unfortunately, we are not taught about our mental faculties and in my opinion, Children and we
should be taught this, to learn what an immense capacity we have.It is proven, that every one of
us is born a genius, but by the time we are Age 20 only maybe 20% or less of this is capacity is
left, due to restriction and limiting beliefs. Imagination, which is a mental faculty is suppressed.
โImagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand,
while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.โ Albert Einstein

Hi Erika,
I did see this video Philip had posted on Facebook and was in awe of it. I like the way you have tied this into the content of this post.
I have to say I was always a misfit. When I was young, I had to “play the game” but with a heavy heart. I didn’t have many friends as a child because of that. I just never fit into the “norm”
But as I got older, I realized it was a blessing. Maybe I’m an old soul, or maybe a misfit, whatever I can call it, I am content with who I am. I walk my own path and respect the path of others. We all deserve to be misfits. That is the beauty of all people.

Hi Erika,
Such a powerful animal and also your piece of writing. I knew elephants were strong but I did not realize the strength they had in terms of what I saw on that video. I most always feel like a misfit in that I try to do what I think is right but sometimes my level of confidence doesn’t allow me to voice my opinions; just depends on the situation.
I’ve always wondered all of my life, how do we know what we are taught is the right thing? It’s something I think about quite a bit.
Again, wonderful post and have a great week.
Hi Monna ,
good the elephant does not have the mental faculties we have and he
hopefully will be doing his usual work again . But we are able to think
and reason and question if it is right what we are taught, and a lot of it
we can find out is not true anymore.
You are right if you think different and are not confident enough
you will keep quiet and maybe think we are wrong ๐
I think we are lucky to have the internet and get so many things to learn
and sometimes small things can open the way for us and we see we are not wrong.
I see people who only getting their informations from TV and are conditioned ,
we have the opportunity to connect with the whole world and see there is much more
than we are told and find new ways of thinking and dare to get out of old conditioning.
Keep an open mind ,we never finish learning.

I think I’ve always been a kind of a misfit. For a long time I compared myself unfavorably to others and lacked self esteem. Hi Erika.
In watching the video it is clear to me that perhaps the elephant is enraged, Was he mistreated? I think elephants like other animals have great memories and those who harm animals may well never realize that animals can exact revenge. They can hold grudges. They can wait until the time is right. Then they explode in an act of what some might say is ‘extreme violence’ You read about this all the time but you also come across the occasional story of animal kindness… A child usually falls into a lion pit or an animal enclosure and the animal helping the injured person to safety.
Animals remember.. Mis treat them and they will get their revenge.
That’s my take on the video.
William
Hi William,
you are right about the elephant ,they remember it they are treated badly.
Hopefully, this one has his revenge and follows the rules again, because the Mahouts
usually, treat them well and have a good relationship with them.
I only used this video ,because it reminded me on the story how the
elephants are trained .
And is it not similar to how we or our kids are raised ?
We are told how to behave and what we should do or not.
And many of us keep this river reed thinking the whole
life to fit in and we do not use our mental faculties which
we are given to be able to realize that we can live a good life
which is full of opportunities and infinite possibilities.
What if ,Einstein ,Bruce Lee would have believed what they
were told ,you can’t ,you are not able to ?
Many people stay their whole life in this conditioning they
grow up with and do not realize that they are capable of much more.
They listen to TV and magazines and newspapers who tell them what is right for them.
They are scared not to fit in and scared of being called a misfit not aware that they
are used.:)

Hi Erika,
It is surprising that animals don’t react differently. We, as humans, tend to think of our pets as “thinkers”. Truth is, we don’t really know the thinking capacity of most animals. If they have any at all in fact. I remember going to a hawking centre locally where they put on some shows to prove how great the birds of prey are. They proved that owls are not really wise, but incredibly void of wisdom or intelligence. On the other hand, a certain vulture (that I can’t remember right now) is extremely intelligent, which they also proved.
I don’t think we know the capacity of any brain. It may be an intelligent assumption based on research, but is there a limit?

No doubt ,that a animal can be very intelligent.
We often see it in this little videos who are shared

mental faculties, but this is a whole subject by itself.
Many eople are not aware of their mental faculties and it
is not taught in school, for example, in fact, even teachers
do not know much about. But like everything if we know ,we can
use it. This is what the program “Magic in your Mind,” for example
teaches.

Interesting article, Jacs.
People know so little of their power, and when they do assert it, they are quickly challenged by those who prefer they keep their silence.
It’s ironic to see, too, that so often those who silence others are often those who have actually championed self-empowerment… for themselves… but not for others.

It’s so sad to think about a baby elephant being stressed out by being tied to a stake. It breaks my heart! I know they are training it but it’s a hard concept for me!
It is a perfect way to get your point across. We don’t want to become desensitized and trapped in our own mind not remembering that we have say and control over our lives, not someone else.

Hi Deborah,
it is a way to make use of the elephants and maybe the one in the video had a bad experience that triggered him to be aggressive.

This is truly amazing article. I think human have strong tendency to have followers. He wants everyone obey his rules. Human knows how he can manipulate things in his benefit. It really makes feel bad inside. but we cannot stop everyone. I will think about it more in spare time. Thanks for this awesome read.

Rihana,
right, humans want animals to obey and also some humans manipulate others to obey. But if one wants to be a free human being he has to become a misfit. If not he easily becomes enslaved.
Good, if you think about it in your spare time it may be good for you.
Thank you
Erika
